Auburn Police to begin patrolling with “cruise lights” activated

July 23 2025

AUBURN, Ala. – On August 1, 2025, Auburn Police officers will begin patrolling certain areas of Auburn, such as the Auburn University campus, shopping centers and neighborhoods, with their cruise lights activated.

Cruise lights are a steady illumination of the emergency light bar on all Auburn Police patrol vehicles. Unlike emergency lights, cruise lights do not flash, and they are not accompanied by a siren.

The purpose of this initiative is to inform passersby of the presence of officers as a means of further engaging the community and deterring potential crimes in progress.

"This new approach is a simple yet effective way for us to increase our visibility and presence in the community,” said Patrol Captain James Pescia. “It helps reinforce our commitment to proactive policing and our mission to provide safety and security to all citizens and visitors. By making our officers more visible, we hope to build trust and encourage positive interactions with the public."

Drivers who encounter a police vehicle with its cruise lights activated are not expected, nor required by law, to take any sort of action. However, if an officer approaches a vehicle with their emergency lights flashing, drivers should safely pull over to the righthand side of the road.
